Rental Car Without a Car Seat in Seoul? Here's the Backup

A Taiwanese family, a rental car, and a missing car seat

A family from Taiwan flew into Incheon recently for a self-drive Korea trip. Smart itinerary — rental car from the airport, a few days in Seoul, then out to the countryside. The kind of trip that's become increasingly popular with families from Taiwan and Hong Kong who want to move at their own pace.

There was just one problem. When they got to the rental car counter at Incheon, they realized they hadn't added a car seat to their booking. No problem, they thought — we'll just add one now.

Then came the sentence no parent wants to hear at 8 AM after a long flight:

"I'm sorry, we're out of car seats. None available today."

They tried another rental desk. Same answer. They tried calling a different company — fully booked for the day. Every car seat at the airport was already out with another family.

They had a rental car, a toddler, no car seat, and no legal way to drive into the city.

How KPLANZ came into the picture

The dad pulled out his phone and searched for car seat rentals in Seoul. KPLANZ came up. He messaged us on Instagram explaining the situation: "We're at Incheon with a rental car but no car seat — do you have any available?"

We did. We told him to come straight to Hongdae Station Exit 3. When they arrived, we had the car seat ready at the door. They installed it in the rental car in the parking area, and within an hour of messaging us, they were back on schedule — on the road, legally, with a properly secured toddler in the back.

The dad told us later it was the single most relieved moment of his trip.

Why this happens more often than people think

Car rental companies at Incheon are excellent at moving cars, but car seats are a tiny corner of their inventory. A typical counter might have 5 to 15 car seats total across all categories — infant, toddler, booster. During peak family travel seasons (summer vacation, Lunar New Year, Golden Week), they're gone by mid-morning.

The problem compounds if:

  • You booked the car seat only at the last minute, not at original booking

  • You didn't book a car seat at all and hoped to add one on-site

  • Your infant, toddler, and older child all need different seats (and the company only has one or two sizes)

  • Your original car got swapped at pickup and the matching seat isn't available

Any of these can leave you stuck at the counter with a driver's license in one hand and a confused child in the other.

What we rent — and why it works in any rental car

KPLANZ carries car seats for different ages:

  • Infant car seats — for newborns and small babies

  • Toddler car seats — for young children who've outgrown the infant stage

  • Booster seats — for older kids who are too big for a full car seat but still need a boost to make the seatbelt fit properly

All of our car seats use standard seatbelt installation, not ISOFIX. That's actually a bigger deal than most parents realize.

Here's why: not every rental car has ISOFIX anchors, and even when they do, the compatibility can be tricky depending on the car seat model. Seatbelt-installed car seats work in any vehicle with a standard 3-point seatbelt — which is essentially every rental car on the road in Korea. Sedan, SUV, minivan, compact — doesn't matter. If it has a seatbelt, it fits.

So when you're picking up a rental car at Incheon and you don't yet know which exact model they'll give you, our car seats are a safe bet regardless.

How to use KPLANZ as a rental-car backup

If you're planning to pick up a rental car at Incheon and you have any doubt about the car seat, here's the smart move:

Plan A — Reserve the car seat with your rental car company in advance, as early as possible.

Plan B — Reserve one with KPLANZ as your backup. If Plan A works, cancel Plan B, no hard feelings. If Plan A fails, your Plan B is already waiting in Hongdae.

The small amount of effort to set up Plan B is nothing compared to standing at Incheon at 8 AM with no solution.

How to reach us — especially in an emergency

If you're at Incheon right now with a rental car and no car seat, skip the rest of this article and message us immediately:

Tell us:

  • Your child's age and approximate weight (so we give you the right seat — infant, toddler, or booster)

  • What time you can be at Hongdae Station Exit 3

  • How many days you need it

We'll confirm availability and have the seat ready when you arrive. Since our seats use standard seatbelts, you won't need to worry about matching it to a specific rental car model. Our team speaks English and Mandarin, so coordinating in Mandarin from a rental car counter is no problem.

One honest observation

Every year, families from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia are driving themselves around Korea in larger numbers. It's a great way to see the country. But the car seat question is the quiet vulnerability in almost every self-drive family itinerary — and it's the one thing that can stop the trip before it even starts.

The Taiwanese family's trip was saved by a 40-minute detour to Hongdae. Most families we help with this don't even lose their morning. They just get a car seat and keep going.

Pack less. Care more. Especially when "care" means making sure the most important passenger is properly buckled in.
